Metropolitan Golf Links is pretty straightforward.

The first tee is open and easy to see, but also exposed to wind and everything happening around you. It’s organized but not tucked away. For some people, that helps them get started quickly. For others, it can feel a little pressured right away.

Unlike more enclosed courses like Presidio Golf Course, Metropolitan is wide open. You can see a lot around you, and there are sprawling grasses, marshland, and not many trees. The wind is almost always a factor, and it affects how you play each shot.

At first, the course looks forgiving with wide fairways and clear views but plays tougher than it looks. The wind and ground conditions force you to adjust more than you might expect.

Pace usually moves well, but it can feel a bit fast at times. There’s sometimes a quiet sense that you need to keep things moving.

Overall, the round is about staying focused and adjusting to an open, exposed course.

  • Metropolitan performs with a different emphasis than other Bay Area courses:

    • Arrival is direct, with minimal transition

    • First tee introduces exposure rather than containment

    • Pace & flow are efficient, sometimes slightly pressured

    • Accessibility is visual, but conditions add complexity

    • Physical comfort is affected by wind and limited shade

    • Social climate remains neutral and non-intrusive

    • Staff behavior is functional and straightforward

    • Environment is open and unbuffered

    • Post-round is present but not extended

    • Return desire depends on comfort with exposure and pace

    This creates a distinct profile:

Metropolitan is a course that prioritizes playability and efficiency over containment.

  • Lake Merced provides a structured and complete post-round environment.

    There is:

    • a formal clubhouse

    • dining spaces

    • areas to sit and transition out of the round

Lake Merced is not an outwardly social or high-energy environment. There’s no judgement about it, but something to pay attention to as you transition post-round.

  • Best for:

    • Players comfortable with open, exposed environments

    • Rounds focused on play and execution

    • Golfers looking to challenge adaptability

    Less ideal for:

    • Beginners seeking a calm first experience

    • Players prioritizing comfort and ease
